Chapter 13

There was a lot to unpack in Nikos’s statement, but the term ‘phoenix mage’ hit me the hardest. “I’m still a witch.”

I felt the adamant need to state that in my heart, and I was sure that was more for my benefit than Nikos’s. My entire life, I’d had witch magic. My coven. My aunt. And now it felt like everything was quickly slipping through my fingers.

Nikos raised an eyebrow. “I’m not sure phoenixes give power to witches.”

“Normally, it’s a take situation,” Sabine commented.

I shot her a glare. “I should have left you in prison, where I didn’t have to deal with you.”

Nikos tsked. “We don’t need to be uncivil. I’m sure we’re all here for the same reasons. Please,” he said as he gestured to two empty seats at the table, saved as though just for us. “Join us for a meal.” Nikos left a pause at the end of his sentence, but I didn’t take the bait. Instead, he chuckled. “A tough crowd tonight.”

Kipp’s fists clenched at his sides. “This isn’t a game.”

“No,” Nikos said, his tone suddenly cold. “It isn’t, elf. Be grateful I’m giving you a place at my table at all.”

Kipp turned to me, a scowl twisting his brows. “We don’t need him. Let’s go.”

I don’t want to be here, either, I thought to Kipp instead of voicing it. The sentiment should have been obvious regardless. But we decided we need to hear what he has to say about my aunt, and if he’s behind all of these combustions—

“Do have this conversation where we can all hear it,” Nikos chided. He gestured again for the empty seats at his table full of vampires.

Nikos had let us into his coven’s compound this far, so I was fairly sure he wouldn’t kill us at this point—even if I had everything he’d ever wanted. Phoenix magic. Phoenix fire. This was a trap for sure. But one we could navigate through nonetheless.

“My apologies,” I said as I moved from Kipp to take the empty seat closest to Nikos. I wasn’t afraid of this vampire lord, not anymore. I’d seen him beg for power, go crazy with the force of it, and cry tears of joy. There was nothing to be afraid of here.

Except what he might be able to tell me about my aunt.

Nikos raised his crimson gaze to Kipp. “Your partner has joined me. Will you?”

Kipp met my gaze and I nodded slowly. We were fine here. Nikos needed something from Kipp or me—or both of us—and that was why he’d let us this far into his compound unchallenged. The problem was finding out what that something was so we could leverage it.

Finally, Kipp joined us at the table and sat beside me. Except, where I’d relaxed fully into my chair to prove to Nikos I was unafraid, Kipp sat at the very edge of his seat and glared at the ancient vampire-fae hybrid.

Once upon a time, Nikos had been a summer fae who had stared the empty abyss beyond the gate in the face and survived—according to him, at least.
